The inaugural Biofuels Markets East Africa conference took place in Dar es Salaam on September 17th & 18th 2008. Even though policies in relation to biofuels are still being developed in many countries (including Tanzania) in East Africa the attendance of 150 industry executives from 26 countries highlights the huge potential of the region. Across East Africa projects are at various stages of development following recent investments and the conference investigated the role East Africa can play in biofuels production; the stage that biofuels policies have reached and what needs to be done moving forward; the critical role of developing biofuels sustainably; the different feedstock options and insights into how the market will develop. The key theme emerging from the conference was that whilst there is still a lot of work to do the region is on track to fulfill its potential.
