Mumbai, September 25-26 2007 The inaugural Carbon Markets India conference held in Mumbai (24th-26th September) was a huge success with many delegates asking when the next version of this global series of events will be held in India. Carbon Markets India attracted 164 participants from 12 countries over the 3 days (see attendee breakdown below). The main aim of the event was to bring together CDM project hosts with the rest of the Carbon Markets value chain to drive the industry forward. With the assistance of strategic partner the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) this objective was achieved. 32% of the audience were Indian project hosts, including senior representatives of Asian Paints, Eastman Exports, Essar Group, Grasim Industries, Indian Sucrose, Oil & Natural Gas Corp, Reliance Industries, Sainsons Paper Industries, Shree Renuka Sugars and many more. The event also had strong support from key Indian bodies with attendees from the Ministry of Science & Technology, CII, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, TERI, British High Commission and several Chambers of Commerce. The conference was opened by Shrinivas V. Dempo, Chairman & Managing Director of Dempo Group who expressed his delight in India hosting an independently researched international Carbon Markets event as well as highlighting the key role that India can play in carbon mitigation moving forward. The conference was characterized by its interactive format with extensive panel discussions, interactive Q&A and audience participation. The interest in this sector was evident in the volume and range of questions attendees posed to the expert speaking line up and the ideas and knowledge they also shared. Key themes emerging from the conference were; creating enough information clarity amongst potential project hosts in India, the lack of experienced carbon project consultants and verifiers in India, the role of the voluntary market and technology transfer.
