The inaugural Sustainable Cities & Communities conference took place in Geneva on September 30th – October 01st 2008. The event was jointly organised by the WWF and Green Power Conferences and saw leading sustainability experts from around the world sharing their visions on how to achieve a One Planet Living future. James P Leape, Director General of the WWF, delivered the opening speech followed by a series of case studies, best practice examples and interactive panel discussions. They looked at how cities and communities can face new challenges in terms of mobility and traffic, urban and spatial planning, building regulations and renewable energies. Delegates were provided with a better understanding of financial challenges, risk management and architecture and urban planning. The importance of retrofitting was discussed as well as the need for behavioral change in our everyday lives to work together towards a One Planet Living.
