Why Bioenergy Finance Forum?
The biomass and waste to energy power generation sector is expected to grow rapidly in the coming decade. Biomass power, the generation of both electricity and heat from biomass resources, is one of the only base load renewable energy sources with widespread availability of fuel resources. Biomass feedstocks currently supply approximately 14% of global primary energy (Source: IEA) and could sustainably be produced in much higher quantities.
Traditional biomass (firewood, charcoal, manure and crop residues) are still the main source of energy for 2-3 billion people worldwide. As global energy demand is increasing with rising quality of standards and population increases, many countries are turning to biomass resources as fuel for commercial-scale electricity production especially given its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to a new report from Pike Research, “worldwide biomass power generation capacity could grow to 86 gigawatts (GW) by 2021, from 58 GW in 2011. That represents a required total investment of $104 billion from 2008 to 2021. Under a more aggressive growth scenario, capacity could reach 115 GW ($135bn).”
In the UK alone, there is a little over 1660MWe of installed bioenergy capacity but there are nearly 3500MWe of bioenergy capacity in various stages of planning, and getting this additional capacity built will be important to the UK meeting it's renewable energy targets.
