Green Power Conference’s GeoPower America’s Conference in San Francisco ended on an optimistic note despite ongoing focus on the cost and availability of capital. With Obama firmly backing renewable energy sources and the DOE on site confirming the government’s focus on geothermal energy, there is much to be hopeful about in terms of the security of the geothermal future.
The meeting was the largest to date and hosted lively debate on topics such as utilities involvement in Power Purchase Agreements, and the willingness of banks to take long term risk with geothermal projects rather than opt for the shorter term security of wind or solar farms. On the morning of the second day, delegates met for round table debates on a variety of topics and came away with valuable knowledge, contacts and advice.
The second day also provided a forum for the discussion of geothermal projects happening in Latin America and with all speakers suggesting that there is strong support for geothermal development and there are no significant transmission challenges, the region looks very promising.
