Day 1 of Ocean Energy 2012 kicked off with keynote addresses from the European Commission, Department of Energy and Climate Change, Scottish and Welsh Governments and MEP Alyn Smith, as they outlined initiatives available to help deliver timely and cost effective projects. Delegates were provided with an update on the support being made available to the marine energy sector- including FP7, SOWFIA, SI Ocean and news on NER300 applications.

Key industrial players Alstom, DCNS, Lockheed Martin, ABB and DONG! Energy went on to discuss the potential for large scale project development. Synergies with offshore wind and the current limitations of the supply chain were explored, with the need for strategic partnerships with ocean technology providers was highlighted as a way to drive development forward.

Updates on successful pilot projects from EDF, Iberdrola, Vattenfall, Meygen and RES Offshore made clear that the path toward commercially viable, large scale arrays is becoming clearer. This was underpinned by technology presentations from Pelamis Wave Power, Voith Hydro, Hammerfest Strom amongst others who working to improve the efficiency of their operations as number of devices in pilot arrays increases.

The importance of securing finance and reducing risk were the key topics addressed on day 2. Presentations included those from the European Investment Bank, The Carbon Trust and Capital Partners Worldwide, outlining the importance of bringing public and private finance together to think on a global scale.

Overall, the optimism for and progress of the sector since 2011 was clearly conveyed in the presentations of all the speakers- I really hope that you will join us in June next year for Ocean Energy 2013!

Testimonials of Ocean Energy 2012:

“The Conference ran like clockwork, with short, sharp presentations followed by immediate questions and comments, then opportunities for delegates to talk in depth with the most relevant people over coffee and lunch. The quality of the presentations was very high, the range very wide. Overall, very revealing on the state of development of the industry and the planning of the authorities”.

Brian Toll, Policy Officer, DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, European Commission

“The event included high level speakers from marine energy developers, governments and the finance community, and provided a comprehensive update on industry progress, the challenges for marine energy and how to overcome them. I found the event extremely useful, both through the quality of the presentations and also through the opportunities to speak to well informed delegates in the margins to really understand the details.”
