In 2011, renewables deal value rose by 40%, with solar up a massive 56% from $10.2 billion to $15.8 billion.
Renewable energy has huge potential as an asset class, offering extensive opportunities to diversify funds, reduce risks and much more. In Europe, deal value rose a huge 80% to $30 billion last year, in spite of the ongoing debt crisis and downward trend in subsidies.
Solar Infrastructure Investment was designed to provide institutional investors and financial asset owners with expert insights into secondary market investment opportunities in the Solar sector.
Investors from BNP Paribas, Terra Firma and First Reserve joined solar developers from Solar Ventures, Ost Energy and Gehrlicher Solar to discuss the growth of solar as an asset class and opportunities on the secondary markets.
Some of the key topics discussed at the conference included:
• The growth of solar as an asset class
• Evaluating and managing risks associated with solar
• The regulatory landscape in Europe and an assessment of future opportunities
• Improving the operational performance and management of existing solar parks
• Consolidation and aggregation of solar assets
• The transition to grid parity and the decline of FiTs and subsidies
• Opportunities to expand into emerging markets using experiences gained in Europe
• Due diligence practices on existing plants and especially on lower quality assets
Infrastructure assets are top of the agenda for many pension funds and insurance companies looking to add reliable long-term investments to their portfolios. There are numerous completed solar plants already on the market, making solar a key area of interest for investors. Indeed, more solar plants are likely to change ownership in 2012, with banks, developers and module suppliers increasingly looking to asset divestiture to increase their liquidity and cash balances.
