With over 350 attendees, a sold out exhibition hall, a faculty of over 60 speakers, an unprecedented number of utility representatives plus keynote addresses from leaders of the renewable energy sector Senator Harry Reid & Steve Black, Solar Power Generation 2011 was the place to be for those serious about large scale power generation in the United States.

Opened by remarks on behalf of Nevada Senator Harry Reid (click here to download his address), the 2011 Solar Power Generation congress was one of great optimism for the sector. The high number of attendees from utility companies reflected the growing focus on solar as a serious source of United States power, and as attendees continued networking at the drinks party, Barack Obama announced in his State of the Union address a new goal of 80 percent of America’s electricity to come from clean energy sources by 2035.
Steve Black, Senator Salazar’s counselor for Energy, and the Bureau of Land Management, expanded upon 2010’s great leaps forward with projects being approved on federal land for the first time. The conference’s panels of investors, regulators and transmission line operators highlighted however the hurdles yet to overcome with financing, opposition from environmental groups and completing grid connection. At the 2012 congress we will get to see how these projects are progressing.
The latest PV, CSP & CPV technologies and projects were discussed in depth as part of focused streams and panels giving an insight into the shape of solar power projects to come. Many emphasized the cost savings that can not only be made due to decreasing module prices but also through improvements in BOS, construction and maintenance. With a number of projects set to break ground this year it is going to be interesting to see how the many innovative suggestions have been taken adopted.
