60 second interview

The German Aerospace Center does research and technology development, systems analysis and market assessment of CSP. Franz Trieb, will present a case study on CSP in Europe at the CSP Congress. Here he provides a preview.

What do you consider to be the most interesting developments and biggest challenges in the CSP  market at this time?
The feed-in laws in Spain and Greece and the new developments in the US are most interesting.
Slow acceptance of CSP in the MENA region due to wrong market approach with ISCCS is the biggest challenge.

What global policy and finance mechanisms are essential to support the growth of the market?
Feed-in tariffs are the most effective and least cost tool for market introduction of renewable power. The core of a feed-in tariff is a long-term power purchase agreement guaranteed by state, that would be sufficient for market introduction in those countries that do not consider a feed-in law.

Where is the most exciting activity happening in CSP and why?
New large scale CSP plants in Spain and US, specially the plants in Spain with 7 h solar energy storage.

What is the most interesting technological development that you have come across and why?
Development of new, light-weight linear Fresnel-type CSP systems.
CSP for co-generation of power, cooling and seawater desalination
