The inaugural Carbon Markets Africa conference held in Cape Town (14th -15th November) was a big success. The main aim of the event was to bring together CDM project hosts with the rest of the Carbon Markets value chain to drive the industry forward. There was an extensive array of presentations and panel discussions, and the train of thought came out that although Africa is lagging behind on CDM projects in comparison with other developing countries, and may have missed the boat for the 2012 window, there is still a lot of hope and positive action for the future. It emerged that the carbon market in Africa is growing and the potential for investment exists, so late starters can get involved, carbon just needs to be seen as complementary to core business strategy. Hopes are high for post 2012 policies to be in place, so the opportunities for Africa still abound.
