Carbon Markets Americas 2008

60 second interview

Suresh Iyer, Assistant General Manager, JSW Steel Limited, India

What do you and your organization do in the Carbon markets sector?

JSW Steel Ltd , part of the JSW group is amongst the largest steel companies in India.  The Company has promoted many CDM projects and has already registered a CDM project which makes it eligible for around 7 Million CER’s over a ten year period.  The JSW Group is also working on many other CDM projects and one of the group companies has registered a CDM project and was issued the single largest issuance of around 4 Million CER’S.

My role is to facilitate the CDM initiatives in the JSW group and I have been responsible in the development / registration / issuance of the above mentioned projects and the sale transactions of the issued CER’s. I am also involved in the development of new CDM projects in the group.

What do you consider to be the key factors which will affect the growth of the Asian Carbon Market?

  1. Awareness of potential CDM benefits and identification and implementation of CDM projects.
  2. Financing of Carbon projects based on their CDM potential.
  3. Technology transfer at reasonable prices.

What do you consider to be the most interesting CDM developments?

More and more companies are reaping the benefits of CDM investments and are internalizing the CDM revenues in their business plans and  promoting new CDM projects.

What do you consider to be the biggest challenges in Asia at this time?

Having said about companies reaping CDM benefits above , but at the same time companies are apprehensive  about the time consuming and procedural delays and uncertainties associated in developing a CDM project especially the small scale sector .Thus the real challenge would be to develop CDM projects taking into account the registration risks involved.
Post 2012 uncertainty impacting investment decision in projects having long gestation periods.

How do you think Asia will be affected by future regulatory developments?

Mandatory reduction cuts if any could affect CDM investment sentiments.
